Introduction: Cultural Competency MIMM

Approved External Performance Improvement Activity

As the American population becomes increasingly diverse, physicians more and more find themselves in clinical scenarios requiring cultural competencies that they might not have acquired during their training or practice experience. Recognizing this need, the ABFM has reviewed potential cultural competency training activities that can provide a mechanism for Diplomates to gain these skills.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has made available just such a program: A Physician's Practical Guide to Culturally Competent Care.

DHHS makes this web-based program available free of charge (please note that Diplomates must be up to date on their MC-FP process fees to have the activity count toward their MC-FP stage requirements) and provides 9 AMA Category 1 CME credits for successful completion of all three modules.

This program will operate somewhat differently from the Performance in Practice Modules developed by the ABFM. This course requires a one-time registration on the HHS Cultural competency website (https://cccm.thinkculturalhealth.hhs.gov). The program consists of three modules:
  1. Fundamentals of Culturally Competent Care
  2. Speaking of Culturally Competent Care
  3. Structuring Culturally Competent Care.

Each module begins with a pre-test, followed by clinical scenarios and didactic content, as well as links to a number of useful on-line resources. Each module ends with a 10-item post-test, which you must pass with at least 70% correct to get credit for the module. You will need to complete all three modules successfully to qualify for performance improvement credit.

You can anticipate that the entire program will take 2- 3 hours of contact time to complete. You can suspend your work at any time and return to the module where you left off, but you will need to finish the program within thirty days of beginning (this is a DHHS requirement, not ABFM's).

We highly recommend that you review the Roadmap. There are several necessary steps to begin the module so please review the Roadmap before you proceed to the HHS website.

Remember, ABFM physicians who complete an approved externally-developed alternate activity for certification performance improvement credit is still required to submit the required certification fees in order to receive credit for these activities. In addition, for the alternative performance improvement activity to apply toward the certification performance improvement requirement, physicians must complete the program within the stage to receive credit.

Upon completion of all required modules, you may upload your certificate of completion inside your physician portfolio for certification credit.
  1. Login to your physician portfolio (www.theabfm.org)
  2. Under "My Certification" section
  3. Click on "Certification Activities"
